Cloud Adoption: What’s the holdup?
I admit it: I bang the drum loudly when it comes to cloud adoption for backup and data recovery. A recent article by TechTarget.com goes so far as to suggest maybe, just maybe, all the noise about cloud adoption is being generated by vendors, rather than by enterprise users who are scrambling to get on board.
In fact, the numbers they cited show cloud adoption numbers may even be flat to falling from September 2012 to March 2013, which surprises me, especially considering the buzz I’m seeing for our Asigra-powered TDV Cloud backup solution. But let’s say they’re right, and cloud adoption is not moving at the pace we single-minded cloud providers might want you to believe. So, why aren’t more IT professionals taking the leap?
Well, TechTarget offered survey statistics for that as well. Here’s what they reported:
- 34 percent of survey respondents cited a lack of control over the cloud environment
- 33% feel their data centers are not virtualized enough to be ready to move to the cloud
- 31% of respondents’ cite concerns over security as a reason they haven’t adopted the cloud yet
All of these are fair and understandable concerns. IT professionals are charged with a very serious role in business continuity, and we’d be remiss to expect them to quickly change their entire data center infrastructure for something that, in their eyes, most likely appears still unproven.
If you think about it, cloud adoption could simply be to IT pros what cell phones were to many people 12 or 15 years ago. Many of us were fearful of unplugging our land lines because, let’s face it, that’s all we’d ever known. So many what-ifs.
But from what I’ve seen, the interest is there. I send out information weekly, I blog, and I hear the feedback we get from cloud adoption customers. Adopting cloud-based backup and data recovery can make it easier to back up individual desktops and remote users, can be a life-saver for a company that is expanding to new markets and can save an enterprise a LOT of money in infrastructure costs.
