Cloud Backup-Data Recovery and Sarbanes-Oxley

Back in the summer of 2002, when investor confidence was at a low not seen since The Great Depression, Pres. George W. Bush decided to sign the Sarbanes-Oxley Act into Law. What’s that have to do with data recovery, you ask? A lot, actually. Bear with me.

sarbanes oxley meets data recoveryYou probably already know all about Sarbanes-Oxley, but I nearly went cross-eyed reading up on this law (also known as SOX) so that I could write this blog post without sounding like a complete idiot. In a nutshell, according to Sarbanes-Oxley for Dummies (you can’t make this stuff up), SOX was intended to ensure “the reliability of publicly reported financial information and bolster confidence in U.S. capital markets.”

SOX also spells out all the duties, requirements and penalties for corporate boards, executives, directors, auditors, attorneys, securities analysts, garbage men, kindergarten teachers, etc. (OK, I admit it. I made up those last two. But you get the point.)

Back to backup and data recovery. If you work for or own/manage a company that falls under Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, who is responsible for making sure you are compliant and that the required data is backed up and protected against a disaster? First of all, do you trust those people? Secondly, how many points of backup do you currently have for that data? You know, the U.S. Government can get pretty mean if you run afoul of their rules.

I don’t want to too the TDV Cloud horn too loudly, but the fact is, that’s what I’m here for. Powered by Asigra, TDV Cloud is certified FIPS 140-2, which is the current U.S. Government standard for protecting data. Data is encrypted on the desktops of authorized users, and can’t be accessed by anyone else. The take-away is that this level of encryption (up to AES256) meets all of today’s legal compliance requirements such as Sarbanes-Oxley, as well as HIPAA and Gramm-Leach-Bliley.

And there are many other arguments in favor of migrating toward a cloud-based backup and data recovery solution, from productivity to cost to security.
