Do You Know Where Your Data Is?

Only 7% of information technology managers say they do.

It seems like common sense that part of a high-quality IT security plan would include knowledge of the physical location where information is stored, but the vast majority of people involved with the process would not know where to travel in the event of a disaster. Even with cloud based backup solutions, in the case of a catastrophic loss of information the better option could be to do a physical drive restoration… but this is only possible if you know where to go for it.

Services such as Google and Amazon’s cloud offerings pull business owners in with unrealistically cheap storage options, but have serious transparency issues. In fact, if you contact their support lines and specifically ask for information regarding the physical location of your data in their server network, generally you will be rebuffed and given a general geographic location; certainly not helping with security concerns.

Aside from just cloud based backups, the same logic applies to magnetic tapes and other media storage. If you cannot be reassured that your critical information is stored in an accessible location, then hard questions need to be asked about your service provider and their commitment to the security of your information. With 79% of the professionals considering the location of their information a top security concern (over hackers or even employee data breaches) it’s a topic that should be addressed.

Here at The Data Vault, we’ve been committed to serving the Louisville community for 30 years. You can rest assured that you will always know where your information is stored with us, whether it’s part of our magnetic tape rotation, cloud storage services, or other secure media storage.
